'Timeless' Canceled at NBC

The drama was produced by independent studio Sony Pictures Television, who fought hard to save the Shawn Ryan drama.

It's one and done for NBC's Timeless.

The freshman time-travel saga spent most of the season on the bubble in spite of landing the coveted post-Voice timeslot that NBC used to launch Blindspot last season. The Shawn Ryan-Eric Kripke drama did not get a full-season pickup, with NBC instead opting for a 16-episode season. Unlike much of NBC's drama slate, Timeless hails from outside studio Sony Pictures Television (also home to The Blacklist). However, the series' 2.0 rating is an improvement over time slot successor Taken (1.5 adults). The first-year series also boasts a loyal fan base, as evidenced by celebrity supporters like SNL star Leslie Jones. Of the multiple time-travel shows to come out this season on broadcast, Timeless stood the best chance at a second run.

Ultimately, NBC renewed Taken — a cheap co-production with in-house producers Universal Television and Europa Corp. — as well as Blindspot, from Warner Bros. Television. 

Ryan, meanwhile, is expected to land a series order at CBS for the network's S.W.A.T. reboot.
